The integration of automation into mining operations represents a distinct technical challenge. Unlike indoor manufacturing facilities, mining requires systems capable of sustained performance in outdoor, demanding, and often unpredictable environments.
During the 1st Vale Robotics Summit in Ouro Preto, Brazil, Comau demonstrated its readiness to support Vale as a scalable technology partner. The focus was on identifying how advanced robotics can be practically applied to transform complex field processes into more stable, safe, and efficient operations.
Scalable Solutions for Unstructured Environments
To address the logistical and environmental complexities of mining, Comau presented solutions designed for durability and ease of deployment. The objective is to provide Vale with a technological foundation that can be scaled across diverse geographical sites and operational requirements.
Two key technologies were highlighted for their ability to simplify complex tasks in harsh environments:
- MyCO Collaborative Robot: recognized for its mechanical robustness and adaptable control interface. Its design allows for seamless integration into existing workflows, providing a reliable automated layer for processes that previously relied on manual intervention in challenging conditions.
- MATE-XB Wearable Robotics: specifically engineered for the physical demands of outdoor labor. By providing active support during lifting and repetitive movements, this technology directly addresses ergonomic risks, ensuring that safety standards are maintained even in the most strenuous field operations.
Transforming Complexity into Performance
The collaboration between Comau and Vale centers on the practical application of technology to mitigate operational risks. By moving toward automated workflows in outdoor settings, the partnership aims to reduce exposure to hazardous variables while simultaneously streamlining production.
“The summit was an important milestone in demonstrating Comau’s capacity to serve as a long-term technology partner for Vale. We are focused on delivering equipment and expertise that can be scaled effectively, ensuring that advanced automation provides tangible value in the demanding environments where Vale operates.”

A Foundation for Operational Growth
As Vale continues to evolve its technical infrastructure, Comau remains committed to providing the scalable support necessary for this transition. By focusing on the intersection of safety and operational throughput, both companies are building a framework where complex mining processes are managed through intelligent, resilient automation.
