Digital Twin for improved battery production: Comau hosts the BATTwin consortium to advance its joint innovation project

Grugliasco, 20 November 2025

On 19 and 20 November, Comau hosted the Month-24 consortium meeting of BATTwin, the European project aimed at developing a multi-level Digital Twin platform designed to drastically reduce defects in battery production lines, with the ambitious goal of achieving zero-defect manufacturing.

At the halfway point of its 42-month timeline, BATTwin has reached a major milestone: both the models and the digital platform have been completed and are now entering the industrial validation phase. The meeting at Comau provided an opportunity to present the latest technological advancements and discuss the activities planned for the coming months.

Collaboration within BATTwin represents an opportunity to share expertise and advanced technologies with the other project partners. Our contribution to the development of the digital platform and to the integration of factory systems is helping accelerate the adoption of zero-defect solutions.

By reinforcing its commitment to large-scale battery manufacturing technologies, Comau has led the development of the project’s digital platform, designed to acquire and integrate data from multiple production facilities. The platform leverages cutting-edge database technologies, such as Neo4j, which are essential for enhancing defect-cause analysis and recall protocols. Unlike traditional SQL systems, Neo4j supports millisecond-level impact analyses. In doing so, it allows immediate identification of all vehicles containing a battery with a component from a specific production batch, thus enabling targeted recalls and reducing costs and inefficiencies.

Drawing on its expertise in process engineering and digitalization, Comau also contributes to the identification, collection and analysis of quality parameters in cell manufacturing, providing real-time defect data through its proprietary In.Grid IoT platform and developing simulations and models of production processes.

The BATTwin consortium’s visit reconfirmed Comau’s central role in developing innovative solutions for quality and sustainability in battery manufacturing, which is a strategic sector for Europe’s energy transition.
