Comau provided its expertise on the matter to different EU projects aimed at supporting key industries and local SMEs with such a relevant transition. Electrification is an important requirement to guarantee a greener, more sustainable production model.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"funded-projects\"><div class=\"funded-project\">\n    <h3 class=\"funded-project-title\">MADE4.0 and the CELLA project: innovation in lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes in collaboration with Comau<\/h3>\n    <p class=\"funded-project-country-business\">\n        Country\/Business:\n        Italy\/Electrification-Automation Systems    <\/p>\n    <div class=\"funded-project-body\">\n        <h4 class=\"funded-project-body-title\">Main Objectives:<\/h4>\n        \n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CELLA project, a collaboration between the MADE Competence Center, Comau, LMT, and the Politecnico di Milano, focuses on developing innovative automation solutions for two critical stages in battery cell production: electrode cutting and the stacking of active materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of the project are two experimental semi-automatic stations installed at MADE4.0, designed to validate technologies ready for scaling up in gigafactories.<br><strong>Electrode Cutting<\/strong>: CELLA uses laser cutting to ensure greater precision, speed, and flexibility compared to mechanical cutting. The research focuses on defining the optimal operating parameters for processing different materials (cathodes, anodes, separators, etc.), in order to guarantee cutting quality and industrial reliability.<br><strong>Sheet-by-Sheet Stacking<\/strong>: This controlled stacking process is fundamental for next-generation cells (e.g., prismatic). To be scalable to the required speeds, it must overcome technical challenges such as ultra-high-precision positioning (within 0.2 mm), electrostatic charge management, and achieving cycle times of less than 0.1 seconds per sheet. Visually GuidEd Robotised Cell for Finishing Processes<\/h3>\n    <p class=\"funded-project-country-business\">\n        Country\/Business:\n        Italy\/Electrification-Automation Systems    <\/p>\n    <div class=\"funded-project-body\">\n        <h4 class=\"funded-project-body-title\">Main Objectives:<\/h4>\n        \n<p>The main focus of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eitmanufacturing.eu\/news-media\/activities\/visually-guided-robotised-cell-for-finishing-processes\/\">VERIFy<\/a> is to develop an automated detection System for quality control and corrective tasks in manufacturing processes that require casting. It features an autonomous robotic cell that inspects casted parts and detects their possible aesthetic defects thanks to its innovative Vision System. Afterwards, the VERIFy system can classify the defective part as scrap or as to-be-finished, where a force feedback-enabled robot handles the finishing process on the spots where said defects have been identified. Automating a process that is traditionally done manually leads to a more accurate diagnosis and minimizes equipment deburring. The research team analyzed the feasibility of automation in 16 assembly lines and developed three prototypes to optimize the manufacturing of personalized bicycles, which in contrast to mass-production follows different standards and requirements.
